How do you convert parts per million to pounds of chemical?
Multiply the pool volume in gallons by the parts-per-million change by 8.34, then divide by 1,000,000. That gives the pounds of pure chemical. Parts per million is pounds per million pounds of water, and 8.34 pounds is the weight of one gallon of water, which is why both numbers appear.
Pounds of pure chemical = gallons x ppm change x 8.34 / 1,000,000. The 8.34 is the weight in pounds of one US gallon of water; parts per million means milligrams per liter, or pounds per million pounds of water, which is why you divide by 1,000,000.
The formula, worked
Common slip Using 7.48 (gallons per cubic foot) in place of 8.34 (pounds per gallon), or dropping a zero in the 1,000,000. The 8.34 is a weight and the 7.48 is a volume conversion; they are never interchangeable. This is the pure weight, before any purity adjustment.
Where this shows up
