How we verify what we publish
Methodology
Pool Operator Prep publishes two different kinds of fact, and they are sourced two different ways: what the national pool-operator credentials involve, and what an individual state or health department actually requires. This page documents both, plus who checks them.
Who reviews this site
Content here is reviewed by the Pool Operator Prep editorial team before publication. Review means checking every stated fact against a primary source and recording the date it was checked, not adding an unverified opinion.
We want to be explicit about what that byline does not mean. We do not claim the Pool Operator Prep editorial team holds a Certified Pool Operator certificate, an Aquatic Facility Operator certificate, or any state operator credential, and nothing on this site should be read as such a claim. Pool Operator Prep is an independent study resource. It is not affiliated with the Pool and Hot Tub Alliance (PHTA), the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), or any state health department, and it does not certify anyone: the instructor-led course is still required. The authority this site stands on is the verification process below, not a credential.
How state requirements are sourced
Whether a public pool needs a certified operator, and which certificate counts, is set by state law and often delegated further to county or city health officers. So every entry on a state requirements page is read out of that jurisdiction's own health regulation or its health department's published guidance, cited by name and code section, with the date we read it.
A state publishes only after it clears that bar. We do not reprint a third party's compiled fifty-state table, we do not infer one state's rule from a neighbor's, and we do not fill an unverified cell with a guess. Where a state delegates the decision to local health officers, we label the row as local and say so plainly rather than implying a statewide answer exists.
51 jurisdictions are published under that rule today, each with its own primary-source list at the bottom of its page.
How exam and cost figures are sourced
The CPO and AFO exams are national, so their format, scoring, and renewal cycle come from PHTA and NRPA's own published course and certification material rather than from any state.
Price is the harder case and we treat it as such. The CPO course is not sold by PHTA directly; it is delivered by independent authorized providers who set their own prices. There is no single official fee to cite. So we publish a dated range compiled from provider pricing at the time of review, label it as a range rather than a quote, and tell readers to confirm the exact figure with the provider they choose. Where a state writes its own operator or permit fee into its regulation, that number is cited to the code section instead.
How facts are kept current
Every guide, FAQ, and state page carries an updated date, and each state
page lists its sources with the date each one was last read. Those dates are what drive
the freshness signals across the site; they are read from the content itself at build
time, so a date shown on a page is the date on that page's own source material.
The statistics page is this site's own original data study. Every figure on it is computed at build time from the verified state entries and dated cost figures described above, never hand-typed, so a re-verified page moves those numbers on the next build.

The newest verified fact on this site is dated . This date is computed from the site's own guides, FAQs, and state entries rather than hardcoded, and it moves automatically as pages are re-verified.
Corrections
Regulations change, and a health department can revise a rule without announcing it. If something here is wrong or out of date, tell us what page it is on, what the fact says, and what it should say instead, ideally with the code section or agency page that shows it.
