The CPO exam is 50 multiple-choice questions. There is no essay or practical component on the written exam; every question is a selection from a set of options.
What score do you need to pass?
The passing score is 74 percent, which is 37 of the 50 questions correct. That means you can miss 13 questions and still pass. Because the margin is real, a strong performance on the knowledge questions buys you room on the harder pool-math items, and vice versa.
Is the CPO exam open book?
Yes. The CPO exam is open book: you may reference the Pool and Spa Operator Handbook during the exam. This is the single most important thing to understand about how to prepare, and it reshapes your study plan.
Open book does not mean easy. It means the factual, definitional, and threshold questions (“what does cyanuric acid do”, “which reading indicates corrosive water”) are answerable by knowing where to look, so raw memorization matters less. What the handbook cannot do for you is the arithmetic. The pool-math word problems still require you to set up a formula, plug in the right numbers, carry the units, and land the decimal, under a clock. That is why the math is where people fail even though the book is open.
How long is the exam?
The exam is timed at three hours. For 50 multiple-choice questions that is a generous allowance, roughly three and a half minutes per question, so time pressure is rarely the thing that fails a prepared candidate. Use the margin to double-check every math answer, because a re-checked decimal is the cheapest point you can earn.
What is on the exam?
The questions are drawn from the domains the course teaches:
- Water chemistry: disinfection, pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness, cyanuric acid, and water balance.
- Filtration and circulation: filter types, turnover, flow, and hydraulics.
- Pool math: volume, turnover rate, flow rate, chemical dosing, and the Langelier Saturation Index.
- Safety and regulations: entrapment prevention, signage, records, and health-code basics.

What happens if you fail?
A national retake policy took effect on 15 September 2025. Under it, you get your initial attempt plus up to two retakes, and all attempts must fall within six months of your original exam date. If you fail all three, you must retake the full course before you can continue.
